On August 30 last year, the London Bullion Market
Association announced that ARY (Dubai) has had its
associate status revoked. What was the reason for this
revocation?
On 10 July 2002 the BBC announced that Pakistani
investigators had found two cheques, each for US$5 million,
allegedly paid by ARY Gold in 1994 to Asid Ali Zardari to
secure a two-year monopoly on gold imports to Pakistan. Is
this correct?
According to an article in the Washington Post of February
18, 2002, US investigators were ‘scrutinising movements of
gold by several companies, including ARY Gold’ in
connection with the fall of the Taliban regime in
Afghanistan. Did any such movements involving ARY
Gold ever take place?
I would be most grateful if you could help me clarify these points,
and reply by either e-mail (lintner@loxinfo.co.th) or fax (+66 53
399 135).”

The sending of the fax did not provide a fair opportunity to
M
ARY to give his side of the allegations in the Article.

First, the fax suggests that the Article will be about the gold
O
trade in Dubai. That may be literally true. But the Article in fact targets
P
Q
ARY and makes serious allegations about him. ARY’s alleged criminality
is in reality the main theme of the Article. It is misleading to say that the
P
Q
Article is merely to be about the Dubai gold trade.

Second, the questions raised by the fax are problematic.
