Introduction
At the core of defamation law are two competing values: freedom of
expression and the protection of reputation. Each is essential to maintaining a
functional democracy. This appeal presents an opportunity to clarify the proper
equilibrium between these two values where the expression at issue relates to a matter
of public interest.
