Sokrate was a frequent critic of the government and a member of the February 20 Movement who defended secularism and civil liberties in his postings. He was arrested outside an Internet cafe, and subsequently charged and convicted for drug possession and trafficking. According to NGOs and media, the charges were politically motivated and false. On appeal, the conviction was upheld, but the sentence was reduced to 18 months.
