672 R. v. fearon Karakatsanis J. [2014] 3 S.C.R. elicit negative reactions, or which may be inher ently “incompatible with .  .  . putting on a public face”: L. Austin, “Privacy and the Question of Tech nology” (2003), 22 Law & Phil. 119, at p. 146, cit ing T. Nagel, “Concealment and Exposure” (1998), 27 Phil. & Publ. Aff. 3, at pp. 18-20. But individu als would fear to do these things if there were no private arena; no place for connections shared only between intimately connected people; no contro versial discussion and debate. As Professor Austin argues, at pp.  146-47, we need this private space in order to grow as distinct individuals, and in or der to have an “authentic inner life and intimate relationships”. . .] l’image publique que l’on souhaite projeter » : L. Austin, « Privacy and the Question of Technology » (2003), 22 Law & Phil. 119, p. 146, citant T. Nagel, « Concealment and Ex posure » (1998), 27 Phil. & Publ. Aff. 3, p. 18-20. [115] A private inner life is essential to the au tonomous individual that forms the basis of a free and democratic society as envisioned by the Char ter. Privacy is a shield for autonomy and freedom, both for their own sake, and because they are pre requisites for our social and political structures. [116] This Court has recognized both the intrin sic value of privacy and the importance of privacy to the fulfillment of other Charter rights and val ues. La Forest J. summarized this dual role in R. v. Dyment, [1988] 2 R.C.S. 417, p. 427-428 : Grounded in man’s physical and moral autonomy, privacy is essential for the well-being of the individual. For this reason alone, it is worthy of constitutional protection, but it also has profound significance for the public order. The restraints imposed on government to pry into the lives of the citizen go to the essence of a democratic state. More recently, in R. v. Spencer, 2014 SCC 43, [2014] 2 S.C.R. 212, at para. 15, Cromwell J. wrote that privacy is “a prerequisite to individual secu rity, self-fulfilment and autonomy as well as to the maintenance of a thriving democratic society”.
