Yassine Ayari, a prominent activist and blogger, was arrested upon his return from abroad, six weeks after he was sentenced in absentia by a military court for defaming the military institution under Article 91 of the Military Justice Code. The court found him guilty of “defaming army officers and senior defence ministry officials” in a series of Facebook posts in which he criticized the Minister of Defence for refusing to appoint a new head of military intelligence and for weakening military institutions. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
