Sokrate was a prominent blogger known for his criticism of the monarchy and political Islam. He was also a member of the February 20 Movement who defended secularism and civil liberties in his postings. He was arrested outside an Internet cafe, and subsequently charged and convicted for drug possession and trafficking. According to NGOs and media, the charges were politically motivated and false. He was convicted and a two year sentence imposed.
